Wildlife Dept. probes 4 forest elephants’ mystery deaths

Wildlife Conservation Department officials have launched probe into the mystery sudden deaths of four elephants at a forest reserve in Habarana.

Four wild elephants were found mysteriously lying dead yesterday (27) near the Thumbikulam forest conservation in Hiriwadunna, Habarana. Among the elephants was a pregnant cow elephant.

“The Wildlife officers attached to Sigiriya regional office of the Wildlife Department are presently carrying out an investigation into the incident. Suspicions have been raised whether the deaths were caused by poisoning,” Wildlife Department sources told the Daily News.

According to reports, no less that five forest elephants have been found dead in similar mysterious circumstances during this week. A 15-year-old seven-foot tusker was found dead at Kurunduwetiya wewa in Moragahawewa, near Nawagaththegama, last Wednesday (25). The postmortem revealed that the tusker has been poisoned.
