SLRC take over within the law - SLFP Media Spokesman

Sri Lanka Freedom Party Media Spokesman MP Weerakumara Dissanayake yesterday said that the President’s decision to take over the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) under his authority is in no way illegal.

President Sirisena took the SLRC under the authority of the Minister of Defense issuing an Extraordinary Gazette No 2140/2 last Monday (09). “Some incorrectly criticize the President’s decision to take over the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation to be an arbitrary decision. One cannot call it arbitrary when the decision was taken within the powers vested with the President,” Dissanakayake also said.

MP Dissanayake speaking to the Daily News also said that President Sirisena’s decision to take the SLRC under his control comes as a result of the delayed programmes to develop and upgrade the SLRC. Dissanayake pointed out that following the decision to take the SLRC under the President’s authority, the much needed upgrading process of the SLRC has accelerated.

Dissanayake speaking further, held the subject minister responsible “for the plight of the SLRC.”

He also pointed out that despite the Yahapalana values, the position of the SLRC Chairman was always filled by pro-UNP personnel. “The Yahapalana government was eager to introduce a transparent procedure when appointing top positions in state bodies. However, such a procedure was not followed when appointing a Chairman for the SLRC,” he added.
