Thanking President Maithripala Sirisena for appointing him to this post despite pressures from various parties, Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva yesterday promised that the needs of the War Heroes, both in service and retired or disabled, would be given special attention.

The Army Commander made these remarks after paying homage to the Sacred Tooth at the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy yesterday to mark his appointment as Commander.

He observed that any individual or entity may level allegations against him over alleged war crimes but it would be the Ministry of External Affairs that would take necessary action with regards to those allegations.

The Army Commander said that he had done his duty to serve the country with dedication and honesty but that some individuals were persistent in leveling allegations against him. He added that the Sri Lanka Army was moving forward as a modern military force. The Army Commander said that all those serving in the Army should be happy and satisfied with their careers and that they would be provided with the necessary support. He said that the Army’s main role is to ensure the security of the country and to strengthen the intelligence agencies and implement a systematic program.

The Army Commander said that according to the prevailing situation in the country, a certain number of Army camps have been set up and that the military is acting to protect all the people in the country and that the Security Forces should be provided with the necessary facilities.
