Matara prospers with Samurdhi ventures

People of Matara now produce many items assisted by the Samurdhi programme.

Samurdhi officials said the Matara, Paravahera South Grama Niladari area was selected the best in the district in this regard.

A considerable number of people in Matara are blacksmiths. Producing gem and jewellery items, pottery, bricks and tiles are also main livelihoods. Many have set up garages as well.

“We lack resources to improve our livelihoods,” they said.

The officials said many of the ventures that rural people commenced were funded by the Samurdhi programme.

Homeless villagers in Matara are provided with houses now. Rural roads were renovated and many are under construction now under the Samurdhi Programme, the officials said.
