Party ready to field new candidate for presidency - Pallewatte

Presidential aspirant Rohan Pallewatte told a gathering in Matara on Tuesday (20) that the next President of Sri Lanka will not be a nominee of a traditional political party, but a new face to the political arena.

Pallewatte said that although he announced his willingness to contest this forthcoming Presidential election three years ago, he was ready to step down and support the candidate who will be nominated by the coalition which is taking shape.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) formed three years ago is on a mission of making an economically free and prosperous, socially inclusive, culturally tolerant, politically democratic, fair by all accountable and responsive, environmentally caring and sustainable, scientifically and technologically innovative and advanced, internationally respected and mutually reciprocal , peaceful country for the citizens to live in peace with human dignity, free from any fears, with love, compassion and spiritual awakening.

Pallewatte said that it was only US$ 10 billion that was needed to pull Sri Lanka’s economy out of the red and added that it was possible to increase Sri Lanka’s per capita income to US$ 10,000.

Pallewatte invited those who want see new faces in Parliament who would help to build a dignified society and a prosperous country to join hands with the SDP.

SDP President Prof. Krishantha Deheragoda said 70 years since Sri Lanka gained independence the nation has not been able to attain the economic and social development achieved by countries like Singapore and Malaysia which were under developed than us seven decades ago. “It shoud be noted that it was Sri Lankan born intellectuals who played major roles in helping to develop these countries to what they are today. If our politicians had made use of Sri Lanka’s human resource base and natural resources in the past seven decades, we would be the most developed country in the region,” he added.

SDP Media Secretary SDP Kelum Amarasinghe said that the party would be making optimum use of social media for its campaign.
