Many private sector workers do not know that the ‘Shrama Vasana’ Fund provides compensation, financial assistance and other benefits to the families of workers who either suffered accidental death or disability while in service in factories and other institutions or while engaged in self-employment,” Labour and Trade Union Relations Minister Ravindra Samaraweera said on August 9.

“We must make private sector workers aware of the benefits of the ‘Shrama Vasana’ Fund,” he added.

Minister Samaraweera was addressing the function to grant scholarships to 30 schoolchildren of the employees who had either passed away or suffered a full or partial disability while on official duties.

Moreover, compensation was provided to 10 workers who contracted occupational diseases and hazards while performing his or her work.

Scholarships that included a Rs. 50,000 fixed deposit, school equipment worth Rs. 10,000 and gift vouchers worth Rs. 2,000 were provided for 30 schoolchildren and Rs. 50,000 was provided to 10 employees who suffered from occupational disease and hazards.

“We are also conducting awareness programmes for workers on industrial safety, proper hygienic practices and productivity and thereby contribute to the development of an efficient, intelligent, healthy workforce through the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH),” the Minister said. Certificates were also presented to 37 youth who had successfully completed the course on occupational health and safety and safeguards against occupational hazards.
