Rs. 1.3 Bn drugs, liquor seized, 26,082 arrested

Liqour and drugs worth of Rs 1.3 billion were taken into custody and 26,082 persons were arrested during the raids conducted in the first half of this year, the Excise Department said in a press release. The release said the Department had earned Rs 95 million as fines during the same period. Among the arrested were 2,131 females.

The majority of the arrests had been done for violating the Excise Ordinance and the corresponding figure was 17,766. Among them, 679 persons were arrested for illicit liquor manufacturing, 403 persons were arrested for selling illicit liquor and 8,911 persons were arrested for transporting and selling illicit spirits.

Another 3,934 persons had been arrested for violating the Poisons, Opium, and Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and the UN Convention on Psycho-active Substances. Under these laws, 1,552 persons had been arrested for selling heroin, 106 persons had been arrested for selling cocaine, 2,212 persons had been arrested for transporting and selling cannabis and 33 persons had been arrested for cultivation of cannabis.

The Excise Department had arrested 2,433 persons for violating the Tobacco Tax Act and the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act. Under those pieces of legislation, 1,275 persons had been arrested for possessing untaxed cigarettes, 150 persons had been arrested for selling tobacco products to individuals below 21 years, and another 564 persons had been arrested for smoking in enclosed public places.

The Excise Department said the majority of its raids were conducted on tip-offs and complaints received from the public.
