Cops reprimanded for ‘further reports’

Panadura Chief Magistrate Amila Ariyasena told the Panadura Police yesterday not to file plaints or amend charge sheets of suspects if there is no evidence against them.

“In most cases, police file further reports but nothing is mentioned in those reports,” the Chief Magistrate said, when a suspect was produced before him.

Attorney-at-law Thamira Rodrigo, defending the suspect, told court that this suspect was in remand for the last six months and the Panadura South Police had not filed action against him. He said when the case is called, the police submit further reports stating that they want to get down reports from telecommunication institutions and then postpone dates. The court cannot keep suspects in remand on the basis of further police reports.

The Chief Magistrate further remanded the suspect giving a final date for the police to prosecute the suspect if there is evidence.
