Airtel leverages on lower cost

Airtel, the world’s third largest telecommunications operator, just launched a new prepaid SIM package in Sri Lanka touting unlimited calls within the network for Rs 98 per month.

The package also includes 1000 SMS and 100 MB of data. The launch took place on 25 June at Park Street Mews.

Jinesh Hegde said “We are keen to bring global expertise into this country in a way which will change the industry in Sri Lanka. It will change the way the consumer will behave in Sri Lanka. Today we are here to talk about this disruption. At the cost of Rs 3 a day Airtel Sri Lanka will offer unlimited voice calls for a month.

Telecommunications Regulator of Sri Lanka rated Airtel as the best 3G network in Sri Lanka. Our technology partner Huawei rated Airtel as the best 3G network. We are in the process of digitizing our customer journey. My Airtel app has been launched.”

25 percent of the customer base has already downloaded the My Airtel application. They have also launched Airtel movie box with over 600 Sinhala movies available. This move is envisioned to gain market share.

The SIM is part of a promotional package by Airtel which will be amended given market feedback.

Chandrashekhar Singh Chauhan, Chief Marketing Officer said: “We’d like to see people giving it a try.” He likened the new product to different sachets for different customers.

Responding to a question on the lack of 4G on Airtel he cited the lack of buffering in the network.

He said that they have postpaid plans on similar price points based on consumer need.
