A project to provide a monthly allowance of Rs.5,000 to centenarians commenced on Monday at the residence of the first recipient, Rosemary Bridget Perera of Samagi Mawatha, Kala-Eliya, Ja-Ela. Ja-Ela Divisional Secretary P.A.A.S. Weerasekara inaugurated the scheme by visiting the residence of Rosemary Perera, who was born on July 27, 1917. Perera is a mother of seven children and 37 grandchildren.
Social Services Officer A.R.D. Hemantha, Old Age Balamandalaya Secretary Stanley Perera; and representatives from the Kala-Elia St. Joachim Elders’ Association, led by its President J.A. David Peiris, were also present at the event.
