Two drown in selfie attempt gone wrong

A soldier and a woman had drowned during an attempt to take a selfie near the Japan Peace Pagoda in Rumassala, Galle, last Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Hasini Fonseka, a 29-year-old resident of Mountlavinia Road, Maharagama; and Umagiliyage Bernard, a 39-year-old soldier attached to the Panadura Army Camp.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased female had visited the soldier’s house with three other friends; one man and two women. They had visited the Japan Peace Pagoda afterward. The five of them had been taking selfies on a rock when a wave had swept the victims away.

Residents of the area had discovered the body of the woman and handed it over to the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital in Galle. Search operations are ongoing to locate the body of the soldier.
