Chathurangi Edussuriya, a final year Engineering student of the Peradeniya University, has won the first prize in an international new inventors’ competition conducted by Construction of Industry Solutions (COINS) recently.

She said her invention was a computer software for on-the-spot inspection of soil samples for road construction projects. The data supplied by it can be downloaded to a mobile phone through the internet.

She says six inventors from the US, UK and China were selected for the final round of the competition along with her. She was selected for the first prize by a panel of judges which included world famous professors.

Chathurangi said her invention would be most helpful particularly in the road construction field as soil samples could be tested on the spot without having to take them to a laboratory, thus saving on time and cost.

She said she made the invention on an idea of postgraduate student Janaka Wickremasuriya, under the supervision of Prof. S.B.S. Abeykoon of the Peradeniya University Civil Engineering Department.
