Five die, 12 injured in harvester-van crash

A harvester and a van collided at Sevenapitya, Archimathagu in the Velikanda area on the Batticaloa-Polonnaruwa highway killing five, including four females and injuring 12 early morning yesterday (19).

Three died on the spot and two died on admission to the Velikanda Divisional Hospital. The deceased were Puspakumara (32), Anoma Kumari (38), Sanjeevani (30), Sepalika (30) and Sakuntala (32) from the Borawa, Bowatha and Thivuladankadawa villages.

The passengers were returning after witnessing the Dimbulagala Poson festival Mihindu Perahera. All passengers travelling in the harvester were affected. The cause of the accident is believed to be the negligence of the van driver and the excessive speed in which the harvester was travelling. The bodies have been sent to the Velikanda Divisional Hospital for the post-mortem while the injured passengers have been transferred to the Polonnaruwa Base Hospital.Velikanda Police are investigating.

Five died  when their van crashed into a tractor at Kolakanawaadiya along the Batticaloa – Welikanda road.

The accident had occurred at 1:45am,said the Police.

Four were female among the dead and five of the injured were male and five others were femal and two were kids.The victims are being treated at the Polonnaruwa hospital.

Investigations are continuing.
