Twenty-six bodies handed over

The Batticaloa Teaching Hospital Director said 26 bodies of blast victims were handed over yesterday after postmortem.

A total of 69 injured were admitted to the hospital, of whom 57 are still continuing treatment there, with seven in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Two have been despatched to the Colombo General Hospital, and five have left the hospital without the knowledge of hospital authorities.

Measures are being taken to hand over the other bodies also. One body cannot be identified due to total disfigurement and one head and two legs remain to be claimed. The maximum use is being made of the resources in the hospital to treat the injured.

Judicial medical officers from Ampara, Badulla and Mahiyaganaya helped to conduct the postmortem examinations. The dedicated service of the medical and paramedical and nursing staff have helped us to treat the injured, the Director said.

Meanwhile, strong security has been deployed in the hospital and the area surrounding it.
