A woman masquerading as a physician and examining patients at the Elpitiya Base Hospital with a stethoscope in hand was arrested by the Elpitiya Police on April 17 afternoon.
She was identified as Janani Pabasara Ratnayake (27) of No 79 C, Kandugoda Delgoda.
Police said the suspect had been examining patients in Ward 2 of the hospital around 6 pm.
The doctor in charge of the ward who noticed an unfamiliar person examining his patients had asked for her credentials. She had told him that she was presently attached to the Kalubowila Colombo South hospital. As she was clueless and muttering.
When inquired about the section of the Colombo South hospital, she was attached to the doctor had felt a bit suspicions and got the hospital staff to hand her over to the Elpitiya Police.
A Police Spokesman said investigations further revealed that the suspect resident in Delgoda had visited her relatives at Ganegoda, Elpitiya.
Thereafter, she had gone to the Elpitiya hospital and started examining patients on further interrogation. She said she is following a counselling course and had come to Elpitiya hospital to gain practical experience in examining patients.
She was due to be produced before Elpitiya Magistrate Gayan Meegahage yesterday (April 18).
