‘Mahinda Rajapaksa did not keep his promises’

Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs Minister Sajith Premadasa said former President Mahinda Rajapaksa when campaigning promised to build 25 houses in each of 38,000 kuda gammanas in 2000, but he did not keep his promise after assuming office.

The Minister was speaking at the ceremony to lay the foundation stone for the Gamini Fonseka kuda gammana under the Semata Sevana housing project in Deniyaya in Ambalantota recently. He said when he became the Housing Minister, he promised to build 20,000 houses in four stages by 2025 under the Semata Sevana housing programme and that is being implemented now. The Mahinda Rajapaksa regime deceived the people by promising various things and these remained dreams that were never realised.

The Minister said he is following the housing programme of late President Ranasinghe Premadasa. Due to the duplicity of the previous regime, the whole country was a failure at that time. Now, a massive development programme on behalf of low-income groups is in existence.

Sri Lanka has obtained leadership for the people to live in peace and harmony and prosperity, enjoying the benefits of development. Numerous projects have been undertaken by the present regime to build national and religious reconciliation. The Gamin Gamata Dorin Dorata programme of President Ranasinghe Premadasa was a boon to the less fortunate who did not possess an inch of land of their own. This housing scheme will be set up in gratitude to the late veteran actor Gamini Fonseka for the services he rendered to the local film industry, Minister Premadasa said.
