Veteran Singer Angeline Gunathilaka passes away

Veteran Singer Angeline Gunathilaka who entertained the nation for over six decades with her scintillating voice passed away at the National Hospital yesterday evening. She was 79.

Angeline who studied music under maestro Sunil Shantha reached the top bracket with her melodious voice which has never grown old. She was only 8 years when she joined the amateur programme of then Radio Ceylon and secured the second place in a musical talent show.

Thereafter, the doors were opened for her to join the Lamapitiya programme conducted by veteran lyricist and broadcaster Karunaratne Abeysekera.

Gunathilaka who studied at St.Mary’s Convent, Matara and St.Thomas College, Kotte is a devout Catholic who has never in her life performed anyone else’s songs other than her guru Sunil Shantha.

She loved to sing her guru Sunil Shantha’s songs with devotion. The nightingale who sang with the legendary H.R. Jothipala, Milton Mallawaarachchi in many Sinhala films of the bygone days, left an indelible imprint in the music arena of the country.

Her favourite song is “Rusith Putha” by Dharmashri Gamage, dedicated to her grandchildren.

Mata Asai Hinahenna Mulu Jeevithe, Re Daval Mal Regum Siri Pana, Pata Podak Thilakala Nalal Thalawe are among her many songs that became all time hits among the Sri Lankan music fans.
