SLPP against introduction of new Constitution - GL

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman Prof.G.L.Peiris yesterday said that his party will take all possible measures to defeat the attempt to introduce a new Constitution.

Addressing a media conference held yesterday at the SLPP head office, Prof Peris said that the SLPP is completely opposed to the Constitution making process of the minority government since a new Constitution is not an urgent need of the country.

“This minority government is completely dependant on the TNA and by bringing a new Constitution; the government is attempting to make the TNA happy and pay gratitude to them. It is questionable whether the UNP or the TNA is ruling the country?” Prof. Peiris added.

Commenting on the five documents containing proposals for Constitution-making presented to Parliament recently, Prof. Peiris said that the way of presenting those documents was completely contrary to the Standing Orders of Parliament and it is necessary to give three days for MPs to go through those documents.

He also charged that the report which was presented with those documents had been compiled by the experts committee and it is not a report of an Operation Committee.

Parliamentarian Rohitha Abeygunawardane requested the government to hold Provincial Councils elections without further delay.

Parliamentarian Gamini Lokuge charged that the government is attempting to weaken the power of trade unions by transferring the TU activists of government institutions using the powers beyond the transferring procedure of the government.
