The Supreme Court has decided that the Nation Building Tax (NBT) Amendment Bill is not inconsistent with the Constitution. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday making an announcement in the Parliament revealed that the Supreme Court has sent the determination to him.
“I wish to announce to the House that I have received the determination of the Supreme Court in respect of the Bill titled “Nation Building Tax (Amendment)” which has been challenged in the Supreme Court in terms of Article 121(1) of the Constitution,” announced the Speaker. “The Supreme Court has determined that neither the Bill as a whole nor any of its provisions thereof is inconsistent with the Constitution”.
He also ordered that the determination of the Supreme Court be printed in the Official Report of the proceedings.
