UNP membership drive too embargoed
JO, UNP LEADERS TOLD TO USE ALTERNATE ROUTES BY MAWANELLA MAGISTRATE
Kandy Magistrate Buddhika Sri Ragala yesterday issued an interim injunction prohibiting the Joint Opposition’s Paada Yathra march originating from the Kandy City today.
The Magistrate ordered to commence the Paada Yathra march from the outskirts of the Kandy city.
The order has been issued to Joint Opposition supporters including Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Dilum Amunugama, Keheliya Rambukwella, Lohan Ratwatte and others.
The Magistrate also issued an interim injunction prohibiting a UNP membership drive due to be held in Kandy town on July 28 morning.
The court has ordered the organizers to conduct the UNP membership drive after 2 p,m, This order has been issued to Minister Lakshman Kiriella, UNP
General Secretary Kabir Hashim and others.
Police sought an order suspending the programs organized by the Joint Opposition and the United National Party in Kandy saying that they would lead to a breach of public peace and order.
The Magistrate issued the order after taking the submissions made by Kandy police into consideration.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Legal Division Ajith Rohana Kandy SSP Edmund Mahendra, SP Chamika Premasiri, ASP Dharshana Gallage have sought the order from the police.
The magistrate stated that it is unfair to deprive the rights of people by law . He noted that the order was issued to prevent the breach of public peace and order.
The Magistrate while suspending the processions and march in the Kandy city has also noted that the Joint Opposition members can participate in religious activities at Sri the Dalada Maligawa.
The Registrar was also ordered to communicate the court order to the leaders of the respective political parties yesterday itself, by the magistrate.
Meanwhile Mawanella Magistrate L. K. Mahinda has issued an order directing a leader organizing the Joint Opposition march due to start from Mawanella and a leader organizing the UNP membership drive in Mawanella on July 29 to appear in court today (July 28) This order has been issued after considering a petition submitted by the Mawanella Police. The Magistrate has also ordered that these activities be conducted by using alternative roads without causing inconvenience to the ordinary public.
