Kumar Gunaratnam sentenced to one year, fined Rs. 50,000

Frontline Socialist Party's Politburo member Sabika Kumar Gunaratnam was sentenced to one year simple imprisonment and fined Rs. 50,000 by Kegalle Magistrate Prasanna Alwis yesterday when he was found guilty of overstaying his visa.

Gunaratnam who arrived here from Australia on January 1, 2015 on a tourist visa was arrested at his mother's house in Anguruwella Kegalla by the Kegalla Police on November 4, 2015 for overstaying his visa which had expired on January 31, 2015.

He was produced in court on 16 occasions in connection with this case and re-remanded. Chief Police Inspector Arjuna Kodikara, Inspector Senarath ASP Kalupahana and Assistant Controller of Immigration and Emmigration Dasitha Niroshan attended court to give evidence in this case. Attorneys Asitha Siriwardene, Nuwan Bopage, Rukmal Bandara, Ananda Kumarasinghe, Chathura Wettasinghe, Ajith Kumara and Kennedy Kodikara appeared for the defence.
