No major ‘Maveerar Day’ celebrations in North - Police Spokesman

There were no major celebrations reported from the Northern Province to commemorate ‘Maveerar Day’, Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Slain LTTE leader V. Prabhakaran’s birthday fell on November 26, and before its demise in 2009, the LTTE commemorated its ‘war heroes’ day on the leader’s birthday. The spokesman said some Tamil people lit lamps at several places including the Nallur Kovil and the Roman Catholic Church in Jaffna to commemorate their dead relatives and no one can take legal action against them as everyone has the right to commemorate their loved ones.

He added that reports claiming that LTTE- loyalists held several programmes in Jaffna to commemorate the victims of the war is completely false.

“However, security has been strengthened in the North by deploying additional police officers and Special Forces in the area,”sources said.

“Since the LTTE is a banned terrorist organization, any activity related to the outfit is illegal under the country’s terrorism prevention laws and any action to commemorate the banned terrorist group or its leader will be considered as an act of terrorism and a crime,” ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said.
