ARREST MANGALA ORDERS COURT
The Matara Magistrate's Court yesterday issued a Court order to arrest Matara district UNP MP Mangala Samaraweera and 10 others for their alleged involvement in obstructing a peaceful protest march on October 5 in Matara by UNP activists, Police spokesman SSP Prishan Jayakody.
UNP activists took to the streets demanding the removal of Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe from the UNP leadership.
They were attacked in Matara town by a group of assailants who have now been identified as Samaraweera's supporters.
Of the 34 suspects taken into custody over assault charges in relation to the attack, two suspects have been identified following an identification parade held by Police yesterday, SSP Jayakody said. The suspects were re-remanded by the Matara Magistrate until October 21, he said.
The protest march was organised by Southern Provincial Council dissident UNP member Maithri Gunaratne and Western Provincial Councillor Shrial Lakthilake. It was alleged that Samaraweera had masterminded this attack to intimidate anti-Ranil factions in the UNP. He obstructed the protest march that was to reach Colombo last Saturday via Weligama, Galle, Hikkaduwa, Kosgoda, Kalutara and Moratuwa.
Following the attack, Gunaratna's father Herman was warded at the Intensive Care Unit of the Tangalle Hospital.
Gunaratna's son Chartha too was hospitalised, while his security officer Roshan was struck by a bullet on his foot. Herman too was remanded.
