‘Law’ as subject to the school curriculum

Justice Minister Thalatha Atukorala seeking approval to include ‘law’ as a subject to the school curriculum, had been approved today.
The Minister said providing law education to the children from an early age was vital.
“This is a victory of the present government. Being educated about basic laws and aspects such as the Constitution since at an early stage helps students in facing day to day legal issues in a better way. Knowing laws and having an understanding about the Penal Code will also help in reducing crimes, people tend to commit crimes due to lack of understanding about repercussions of these crimes.” She said.

It's an important step in the right direction! Basic principles and legal concepts and lawmaking process and how an act of Parliament becomes law should be included in the school curriculum. Many students will find law as an area that helps them to understand their rights and duties how these rights are protected by law.

This is very .good. Even students will be aware of illegal and unconstitutional acts by any, including legislators and the Executive. This way students will start reading the latest NLRs and also come to know about the most unconstitutional act in the constitutional history of Sri Lanka by the President , which he did in October 2018, which the President did in a dictatorial manner.
