Long-standing United National Party(UNP) member and Opposition Leader of the Kataragama Pradeshiya Sabha Ashoka Wickremesinghe on Monday pledged his support for the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) during a meeting held with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees. Commending the government's program to develop the country, Ashoka Wickremesinghe told the President that he will work for the UPFA's victory at the forthcoming Uva Provincial Council election. The Uva Wellassa region which stood up against western imperialism in 1818, was completely devastated by the British rulers. The youth who were above the age of 16 years, were ordered to be killed by British Governor Robert Brownrigg, while irrigation schemes, paddy fields and houses were destroyed by the British rulers. The region received step motherly treatment from successive governments even after the country gained independence from the British in 1948.
