The construction of an artificial island named ‘Lotus Island’ coming under the second phase of the Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa ports development project is in rapid progress. The Lotus Island which is 50 hectares in extent and with a top elevation of 8 metres is being constructed by dumping soil excavated from the harbour basin of the phase two construction.
A 2,140 metre long quay for six births, an oil terminal with a depth of minus 17 metres and a length of 300 metres, an artificial island of 50 hectares with a top elevation of eight metres, a fly-over bridge and roads and yards will be among the key features of phase 11 of the Magam Ruhunupura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port that will be commissioned in January 2016.
