Austrian Airlines to fly to Lanka after eight years

Flights between Austria and Colombo suspended for the last eight years due to the conflict, will resume today.

An Austrian Airlines flight with 265 passengers is due to land at the Bandaranaike International Airport at 7.30 a.m. today.

A special ceremony will be held under the patronage of Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva to welcome the passengers. A Transport Ministry spokesman said Austrian Airlines will begin a once-a-week direct flight to Sri Lanka following bilateral talks between Civil Aviation authorities of both countries held in Bali, Indonesia in November 2014. He said this will be a major boost for Sri Lanka's tourism industry as most Austrian tourists prefer to spend holidays around beaches.
