Another saltwater crocodile spotted

Another saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) was spotted in the sea off the Galle Face beach yesterday afternoon.

A Wildlife Conservation Department spokesperson said a team of officials was dispatched to the area immediately. She said the length of the crocodile is about eight feet.

The spokesperson said wildlife officers' attempts to catch the crocodile with the help of Navy personnel failed yesterday afternoon due to inclement weather conditions. She said another attempt would be made to catch the crocodile.

Navy Media Spokesman Indika de Silva said a team of Navy personnel was deployed in four boats to search the sea area where the crocodile was reported to have been sighted drifting in the water, but they were unable to catch it. The search operations commenced following public complaints.

Earlier this week, a 17 feet saltwater crocodile was sighted roaming in the sea off Mount Lavinia, Dehiwala and Colpetty. It was found dead on September 23 despite several attempts made by the Wildlife officials to rescue it.

The Saltwater Crocodile is listed as 'Endangered' in the 2012 Red List of Sri Lanka.
