Expolanka Holdings PLC has granted Rs. one million to HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL) to provide microfinance loans to underprivileged women in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu.

Accordingly, 77 women in the Gramaseva Niladhari Divisions of Paranthan, Thiruviaru, Udarkadu North and South Mankikapuram, Sivanagar and Vishvasmadu West received Rs.718,000 worth livelihood loans.

The women who are benefitted under this programme are utilising the loans to start self employment projects such as vegetable, spice and fruit cultivation, poultry, goat and cattle farming, manufacturing handicraft, reed and rush products and also to run small boutiques.

Expolanka CSR and Activations Manager Abdul Lathif Sajeeth Ilyas said Sri Lanka has a fast ageing population and it is necessary to grant them with microfinance loans to support poverty.

HASL Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said women in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts face difficulties due to non availability of financial assistance to start income generation activities and this situation resulted HelpAge Sri Lanka to implement micro finance loans for them to overcome their economic problems.

HASL, Programme Manager Chaminda de Silva said this is a revolving micro loan scheme with one per cent service charge and thanked Expolanka Holdings for their contribution towards this worthy cause. He said all loans are recovered through Women Societies and thereafter the money is granted to another group of women to enable them to start income generating activities.
