PM wants UNP to be major political force in Asia: Gayantha

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe hopes to see the United National Party (UNP) as a major political force in Asia by the time it celebrates its 80th Anniversary, said UNP Media Spokesperson, Minister Gayantha Karunathilake yesterday.

The UNP Working Committee which met yesterday evening to discuss its 70th year Anniversary which is to be celebrated on Saturday, according to Karunathilake was significant as it also invited UNP members of Parliament to its meeting.

“We discussed ways in which we can take the party forward and move towards a new ideology”, said Karunathilake addressing the media outside of Sirikotha.

The Working Committee meeting also had UNP General Secretary, Kabir Hashim read out the opening minutes of the first UNP meeting which established the party.

“D.S.Senanayake opened the meeting by moving a Resolution which explained the aims and objects of the party and emphasised the need for unity among all communities at that first meeting,” the General Secretary said.

He also appealed for goodwill and mutual trust and also hoped that the Unite National Party will be a strong political force in the county and play a great part in moulding the future destinies of the people.

Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe in turn moved a Resolution to appreciate and recognize the work done by previous party leaders to the country,

“ UNP leaders, D.S.Senanayake, Dudley Senanayake, John Kotalawala, J.R.Jayewardene, R. Premadasa and D.B.Wijetunga rendered great service and made sacrifices to build the party during their time. They also worked to popularise and strengthen the party.Because of that work, the UNP has become not only a political party but an institution that safeguards the nation,”the Prime Minister said.
