Another spot tender to purchase coal to Lakvijaya power plant

The government will open another spot tender to purchase coal to the Lakvijaya power plant this Friday, Power and Renewable Energy Ministry Secretary B.M.S. Batagoda said.

He said this spot tender is to purchase 330,000 MT of coal from five shipments. Batagoda said the bids would be closed the same day. He said the ministry has now registered 12 suppliers

which have fulfilled the required qualifications adding that another supplier is to be registered shortly. “Earlier the entire process was monopolised by one company named Noble Resources Ltd. Now the system has been changed and the environment for competitive bidding has been created,” he said.

Batagoda said a Cabinet paper has been presented seeking the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers on the long term tender awarded to Swiss Singapore Overseas Ltd to supply coal to the Norochcholai power plant.

The Cabinet paper has been submitted along with the Supreme Court opinion on the matter and the report of the tri-member expert committee.

Contacted by the Daily News, Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said the Cabinet paper was not taken up for discussion at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday.
