Lankans in action at Rio today

RIO DE JANEIRO: Three Sri Lankans will be seen in action on day four of the XXXIst Olympic Games here on Monday (8).

The trio – judoka Chamara Nuwan Dharmawardena (in men’s 73 weight category preliminary round), weightlifter Sudesh Peiris (in men’s 62 weight class) and shooter Mangala Samarakoon (in men’s rifle shooting 10m air rifle qualification round) will see all their respective events commencing at the same time at different venues – 9 A.M. local time (5.30 P.M. Sri Lanka time).

They have been training hard ever since their arrival at the Olympic city about a week ago and are in good shape, eagerly awaiting their respective events.

Samarakoon, having participated in London 2014, will be competing in his second successive Olympic Games while Dharmawardena and Peiris will be making their Olympic debut.

“I think I should be able to do something here, I mean to lift the best weight in my career. It is a big challenge and it not easy at this level. But I feel that I could make my presence here and make my country proud,” weightlifter Peiris said.

Dharmawardena too feel that he could achieve a notable performance in Rio if “everything goes fine”. “I have been working hard to keep my Olympic dream alive. If I could make my nation proud in some way, that alone is a satisfaction than personal glory. I will try my best to achieve that,” Dharmawardena said.

Samarakoon said he was little worried about ammunition for practices in Rio but the team management has sorted out that issue. “My target is to achieve my personal best score and break the Sri Lanka record. Over the past few months, I have been training hard and this is the opportunity to asses that. I am ready to face the challenge.”

The presence of his coach – former Commonwealth Games gold medallist Pushpamali Ramanayake, will be a big boost for Samarakoon. Meanwhile, Virginia Thrasher of USA became the first gold medallist at Rio 2016 Games when she registered the best score in women’s 10m air rifle event. Du Li, left took the silver while Yi Siling won the bronze.
