Arrangements in place for the Kandy Esala Pageant

The historic Esala Pageant of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy, will be held from August 3 to 18. The pageant will commence with the Kap planting ceremony on August 3, said Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela, at a meeting held at the Maligawa assembly hall to make preparations for the event.

He said, the Devale Perahera will be held from August 3 to7, Kumbal Perahera from August 8 to 12, and the Randoli Perahera from August 13 to 17. The pageant will conclude with the Water Cutting ceremony and the Day Perahera on August 18.

The Diyawadana Nilame said, drinking water should be supplied to artists during the perahera, by calling them to the side of the road, without obstructing the perahera during its progress.

Liquor would be strictly taboo for artists taking part in the perahera. He said their endeavour was to conduct the pageant with the usual pomp and pageantry of the historic past. Kandy Municipal Commissioner Chandana Tennakoon said the municipal council would take all measures to clean up and decorate the city and provide uninterrupted water supply. All hotels and restaurants would be kept under observation, to ensure they offer hygienic food and drinks to the crowds thronging the city.

An officer of the Excise Department said, all taverns and liquor shops in Gangawata Korale, Eiriyagama, Aladeniya and Kengalle areas will be closed during the perahera season.

Kandy SSP Esmond Mahinda said a 2900 strong police contingent would be deployed for perahera duties, including traffic arrangements.

District Director of Health Services Dr. Sarath Weerabandara said a special dengue eradication program would be undertaken in the Kandy district during the perahera season, since 2,200 dengue patients had been reported from the district.

Kandy District Secretary M.M.P Hitisekara said, all state institutions would lend their support to make the pageant a success.

A special bus and train service will be maintained to cater to the people visiting Kandy during the perahera, assured representatives of the SLTB, CGR and private bus owners present.
