Re-structuring of Piriven education:PM calls for report

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he has called for a report for the immediate re-structuring of Piriven education in the country, as there is an alarming deterioration in the system.

The Prime Minister was speaking while participating at the 10th anniversary commemoration of Sri Bodhirajaramaya temple in Lunawa, Moratuwa, yesterday.

He added that elaborate plans are being made for the celebration of International Day of Vesak in Sri Lanka next year.

The Prime Minister further said that a special conference would be held in 2018 on Theravada Buddhism. This conference is being planned to coincide with the 70th National Independence Day ceremony.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said he has proposed to make necessary arrangements to establish a Pirivena in Sanchi to teach Theravada Buddhism to Theravada Bhikkus in India in collaboration with the State Government of Madhya Pradesh.

“The preliminary negotiations with the State Government of Madhya Pradesh have already been made in this regard,” the Prime Minister said.

“The government under the directives of President Maithripala Sirisena is bound to protect the Buddha Sasana in keeping with the pledge given to the people on January 8 and August 17 respectively. It is the responsibility of each and every government to promote and foster the Buddha Sasana to build a fair society where justice reins supreme. We will also take measures to ensure the religious rights and freedom of all other religions as well,” the Prime Minister added.
