Mahinda Rajapaksa steps down from Shadow Cabinet

Former President Mahinda Rajapkasa has stepped down from the post assigned to him in the Joint Opposition’s Shadow Cabinet.

Yesterday the Joint Opposition made several appointments to its Shadow Cabinet: The former President was accorded the role of Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Minister of Buddha Sasana.

The reasons for the former President’s withdrawal from the Joint Opposition Shadow Cabinet is yet unknown, but sources close to Rajapaksa say that he had only advised the Joint Opposition to appoint monitoring MPs to ministries in the government, not form a Shadow Cabinet.

United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) MP Lohan Ratwatte who was given the portfolio of Water Supply and Urban Development has also withdrawn from his post.
