Professor Carlo Fonseka will defy court order on SAITM students

President of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) Professor Carlo Fonseka made known his intention to defy any court order granting SAITM recognition as doctors.

Speaking to Daily News Online, he said he would step down from his position as President, rather than allow graduates from the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) to register with the SLMC.

Fonseka said a panel of distinguished medical practitioners had concluded that SAITM is not suitable to produce medical students, and as such, he would not allow them recognition as doctors.

Yesterday, the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) staged an islandwide token protest against graduates from SAITM being allowed to register with the SLMC. The Inter-University Student Federation (IUSF) also held protests to coincide with the GMOA protest.
