Film ‘Adaraneeya Kathawak’ violates statutory laws: Tobacco and Alcohol Authority

The National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) in a complaint to the Narahenpita Police alleged that the Sinhala film ‘Adaraneeya Kathawak’ (A Melody of Love) violates provisions of the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act.

In its complaint NATA said that the film, currently screening at movie theatres across the island, contains scenes depicting tobacco and alcohol consumption, in contravention to the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol Act.

Narahenpita Police filed a fact report in this regard, seeking a true copy of the film from the film Director, and the National Film Corporation (NFC).

When the case came up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris, Director Priyantha Colombage, the National Film Corporation Chairman and the Manager of the Majestic City Cinema were ordered to hand over the true copy of the film to the Narahenpita Police.

Sri Lank has become a despotic State and niw cannot even make a movie to the young.

true.. i watched this movie twice and it doesn't support to any of Tobacco products. i think there is a mafia. may be Tobacco is trying to stop this movie b'coz end of the film anyone can understand smoking is not good for health.. um telling to all pls watch this movie before u take any decision.

Cinematography is great in this movie but it's motive is quite unclear to me. If a young person watched this movie he would see glamorisation of alcohol and cigarettes during the entire movie and only at the end it would show the death. How effective can that be to teach youth in Sri Lanka the adverse effects of alcohol and cigarettes. Clearly a failed attempt to teach people bad effects of alcohol and cigarettes rather it promotes "if you have problems then drink alcohol and smoke", "if girl left you then drink alcohol and smoke", " if you failed in life then suicide". I don't think this is what we should teach our children and youth.
