SLFP lost due to Basil: Devapriya

Various conspiracies are being hatched to prevent the SLFP from winning the upcoming local government election, Western Province Chief Minister Isura Devapriya said.

He said former Minister Basil Rajapaksa is reportedly planning to join hands with a group of SLFP Provincial Councillors and contest as a separate group at the forthcoming local government polls.

The SLFP is aware that Rajapaksa was conducting meetings secretly at village level to fulfill his agendas, he said.

"We must defeat these efforts. Basil Rajapaksa was the main reason for the defeat of the former government. He left the country after the defeat. If it wasn’t for Basil we would have won the election,” Devapriya said.

"Basil is trying to get involved in the SLFP's internal affairs. He controlled most key ministries and allocations. Funds were provided on his decisions. The Joint Opposition has broken into splinters and is now slowly turning into a diluted group. A section of the Joint Opposition is also against Basil Rajapaksa alleging that he was the reason for the defeat of the former President," the Chief Minister said.

SLFP activists have no intention of splitting the party. There should be only one leader in a party. Therefore, all SLFPers must lineup with President Maithripala Sirisena, he told a media briefing in Colombo yesterday.

Devapriya said the majority of the rural people continue to remain with the SLFP.

"Therefore, all members in local government bodies should join hands with President Sirisena to ensure the victory of the SLFP by defeating all conspiracies at the forthcoming election since the President has decided to give nominations to all SLFP candidates at the upcoming local government election, he said.

The SLFP May Day rally was held on a grand scale at the Samanala Grounds with a record crowd. The Joint Opposition could not bear this success and they were speechless, Devapriya said.

"We have been able to win previous elections except two when President Maithripala Sirisena acted as the SLFP General Secretary. Two elections were defeated when he was not the General Secretary. When we had problems with the party, we always expressed our grievances to him and he listened to them patiently and made maximum effort to solve them. We should not obstruct the forward march of the government and the President. The President must be given a certain period to build the country," the Chief Minister said.

"Several UNP members who joined the SLFP on various privileges and posts during the former regime are attempting to destroy SLFP today. If there is a division in the SLFP, it is beneficial for the UNP. Therefore, we all must get-together for an SLFP victory," he said.

The SLFP is a strong party since a powerful foundation of Pancha Maha Balawegaya comprising sanga, weda, guru, govi and kamkaru was laid. Eventhough certain elements are conspiring to break the SLFP, nothing can be done to destroy it, Devapriya said.

UNPers who joined hands with the SLFP were given all privileges neglecting the original SLFPers during the former regime. This caused the January 8 revolution. President Sirisena treats all equally and is doing everything possible to protect the party, he said.

The main reason for the former President's defeat was the activities of his family members. The collapse of the former government began with the assassination of former Parliamentarian Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra. But, the former government did not correct its mistakes resulting in the collapse of the government, he said.
