S.M. Ranjith allegedly misused over Rs 6.7 m in state funds – Senior State Counsel

Former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith Samarakoon leaving the Presidential Commission Investigating Fraud, Corruption Abuse of Power State Resources and Privileges yesterday.

Former North Central Province Chief Minister S.M. Ranjith Samarakoon had allegedly misused state funds amounting to nearly Rs 6,769,000 by exceeding the limit of his official fuel allowance in addition to obtaining a fuel allowance not entitled to him for six other vehicles,revealed Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara before the Presidential Commission Investigating Fraud, Corruption Abuse of Power State Resources and Privileges yesterday. Producing Documentary evidence, Janaka Bandara said Samarakoon had allegedly misused state resources by obtaining fuel from 2012 to 2015 in contravention of all stipulations laid down by government circulars, when he was only entitled to three official vehicles. This was revealed during investigations conducted by Sub Inspector Amarasinghe and Constable Wijesinghe.

The Commission yesterday heard initial evidence in an investigation made into alleged misuse of state resources made by S M Ranjith Samarakoon and his personal assistant Shanthi Chandrasena. Samarakoon is a brother of former Minister S M Chandrasena and Mrs Shanthi Chandrasena is the wife of S.M.Chandrasena. Eight persons including Samarakoon and Mrs Chandrasena appeared before the Commission yesterday.
