RTI to be passed on June 23

The Right to Information Bill will be presented to Parliament for its Second Reading on June 23, Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Minister Gayantha Karunathilake said yesterday. “We have waited a long time for this Bill. For almost 20 years, we have tried  to implement the Right to Information Bill. During President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s time, her government recognised the need for it. Then in 2002 and 2005 we tried to pass it but failed,” Minister Karunathilake said.

The minister was speaking at the Cabinet briefing held at the Information Department yesterday.

He added that the Canadian NGO, Centre for Law and Democracy had described the Bill to be the 7th best Right to Information Bill in the world. Deputy Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Minister Karunarathna Paranavithana added that all political parties had requested for an extended debate on the Bill and thus they planned to either pass it on 23 June or 24.

Paranavithana said the government expected the Bill to be passed through Parliament with very little opposition.
