Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala first Sri Lankan to summit Mount Everest

In the early hours of the 21st May, 2016, Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala summited the world’s highest mountain – Mt Everest. In doing so she became the first Sri Lankan to reach the top of the world. She was accompanied to beyond Camp 4 by her fellow Sri Lankan and climbing partner Johann Peries. At 29,029ft above sea level, Mt Everest stands over three times taller than Mt Pidurutalagala, Sri Lanka’s highest peak, and represents a formidable challenge to experienced mountaineers across the globe.

The two Sri Lankans have been training towards this day for many years and this is a great achievement, illustrating both their physical and mental toughness to not only exceed, but also excel at an altitude where even breathing is difficult.
