Embilipitiya death : Ten police officers to be charge sheeted

Charge sheets are to be served on 10 police officers allegedly connected to the death of Sumith Prasanna Jayawardena in January this year.

It is believed that Prasanna was pushed down from a balcony of a three storied building by police personnel attached to the Embilipitiya police station during a brawl which erupted between the police and public at a party on January 04, 2016.

Accordingly the Special Investigation Division of the Police Department will issue the charge sheets on ten police officers attached to the Embilipitiya police station during the next week.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee was appointed by the Independent Police Commission to carry out an investigation into the death of Sumith Prassana Jayawardena (29), a father of two.

The National Police Commission Secretary Ariyadasa Cooray said that the charge sheets will be handed over to the suspects following a recommendation by the three member committee which is probing the above incident. IGP Pujith Jayasundara has been notified about the decision to issue charge sheets to the Police Officers, he further added.

The former Embilipitiya ASP who was arrested and remanded in connection with the death of Sumith Prasanna had been further remanded till May 18 after being produced before the Embilipitiya Additional Magistrate Prasanna Fernando.
