JCTU boasts of 200,000 crowd for May Day rally

Joint Council of Trade Union Convener W.H. Piyadasa said they hope to bring a crowd of over 200,000 to the May Day rally in Kirulapone in a show of strength of the working class. He was addressing a press conference at Abhayaramaya in Narahenpita. He said they would not be deterred by the various challenges and obstacles before them.

“The May Day rally in Kirulapone is the biggest rally against this anti-people Government. It will be organized under the theme ‘Joint working class May Day’. About 10,000 people are to join the rally from the Public Services Trade Union of which I hold the Chairmanship,” Piyadasa said.

Thousands of members of other Trade Unions af the Joint Council of Trade Union will also take part in it to fight back to protect the rights of working class which are being scrapped day by day,” he said.

“The power of working class will be shown in this rally. The people burdened by the VAT and other taxes, farmers, fishermen, minor crop cultivators and those who had faced injustices by political revenge taking will join hands with us. The suppression of students and curtailment of allocations for education will also be raised in this rally” he explained.

He said they have no intention of splitting any political party through this rally. “We only voice for the rights of the working class. The UNP and SLFP coalition government which came to power by slinging mud at former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is further inconveniencing the people without doing their part” he added.

United Nurses Association President Ven. Muruththettuwe Ananda Thera and Lanka Labour Central Council General Secretary Somaweera Chandrasiri also spoke.
