About 55,000 hectare of paddy to be cultivated in Ampara

About 55,000 hectares of paddy will be cultivated during the Yala season 2016 in the Ampara district, Ampara Agriculture Deputy Director M.S.M.Kalees said.

He said about 23,074 acres of paddy and sugarcane cultivation of 18,630 acres and subsidiary food crops in 120 acres will be cultivated on the right bank of the Gal-Oya river and Akkaraipattu areas.

This was revealed at the cultivation meeting held at the Akkaraipattu Divisional Secretariat recently. Sowing for the Yala 2016 season should be completed before April 30. It was also decided to complete Yala crop harvesting by August 15. The Agriculture Department is taking action to allocate 20 percent on the production of subsidiary food crops.

The department is issuing seed and planting material. Poison mixed chemicals should not be used by farmers.

Most paddy farmers in Ampara are using certified seed paddy for their cultivation. They can get their seed paddy requirement from their seed paddy processing centres in Ampara.

Ampara District Additional District Secretary M.I.Ameer, Irrigation Director Nihal Sriwardena, Agriculture Assistant Director M.F.A.Saneer, Akkaraipattu Divisional Secretary A.A.Latheef and farmer organization representatives were also present.
