Doctors to be doubled in SL

The number of specialist doctors serving in Sri Lanka will be doubled soon. Arrangements have already been made to achieve this under the direction of Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.

Dr. Mahipala said that a total of 3,078 specialist doctors are required for Sri Lanka but only 1,577 are serving in the country at the moment. There is a shortage of 1,501 specialist doctors, he said.

He said that a total of 16,100 doctors serve in the country while the actual number of doctors required is 18,200. Another 1,100 doctors will receive internships during this year, he said.

He added that there are1,600 dentists and 60 dental specialists in the country.

A full survey of doctors is being conducted in order to distribute human resources equally among all state hospitals and other state medical institutions, he added.
