Mini- budget will impose further hardships on the public: Herath

The government's proposed mini-budget to broaden the tax base will impose further hardships on the public, JVP MP Vijitha Herath said.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday, he said these tax revisions would increase public protests against the government.

Herath said the economic burden on the people increased from the previous budget too, adding that the government was planning to present another mini-budget in March to revise the taxes with the aim of increasing government income.

"We do not see that the government has a comprehensive plan to find more money by increasing production and developing the service sector. Instead, it resorts to easy ways of obtaining more and more loans, curtailing subsidies, increasing the taxes and selling of state assets.

We are watching these developments and will raise our objections where necessary," the MP said.
