Magistrate in hot water

The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has sought an explanation from Magistrate Thilina Gamage over the incident where he allegedly attempted to barge into the elephant orphanage in Pinnawala and obstructed the work of its officials. Highly placed sources of the Commission told the Daily News yesterday that the JSC had sent a letter to the Magistrate, demanding an explanation over the controversy.

It was reported in some sections of the media that the Magistrate allegedly entered the Orphanage in a Montero jeep with an armed police personnel through an entrance reserved for elephants.

Media reports further said the Magistrate allegedly obstructed the work of its officials and threatened them when they attempted to prevent the Magistrate from entering the orphanage.

Senior State Counsel Dileepa Peiris requested Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya on February 10 to direct the IGP to hold an inquiry into the incident.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate had earlier ordered that all elephant calves that were kept illegally under the custody of certain individuals be sent to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage under the supervision and care of a veterinary surgeon.

Accordingly, a large number of elephant calves that had been kept illegally had been taken to the orphanage.

It was against this backdrop that the Magistrate's alleged attempt to enter the elephant orphanage through an entrance reserved for elephants created a controversy among the legal circles.

If`the`magistrate in fact was trespassing should he not be charged with that offence? There is a crying need for training for judicial officers rather than appointing anyone who has had a few years of experience. The Law College must introduce this course to those applicants who not only have displayed academic aptitude but also proven the right temperament to adjudication and basic moral turpitude by reference to their interaction with.... peers, judges they have appeared before and the community they lived in. We have had the misfortune of witnessing recently with absolute shame and horror the behavior of useless scum who were appointed to the highest judicial offices of the Land.People deserve better for the tax payers money. Many Lawyers who were used to decent standards are now bitterly complaining of ,in some instances ,the gutter standards of the legal profession at the present time.
