Frontline Socialist Party will fight ETCA

Frontline Socialist Party convener Pubudu Jagoda said their party is totally against the draft of the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA), to be signed between Sri Lanka and India.

Addressing the media yesterday, Jagoda said the ETCA would cause severe negative consequences to the country and economy and therefore the Frontline Socialist Party will take every available measure to stop the signing of the agreement.

He said that although Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had said that the government was mandated by people at the general election to enter such trade and economic agreements with other countries, people of the country had only mandated to remove certain people from leadership, not sign agreements.

Meanwhile Deputy Foreign Minister Harsha de Silva addressing the media a few days ago said that the ETCA will not cause any disadvantages to the country if the country signs it with India. Deputy Minister Silva added that the agreement will not be a threat to local professionals since the agreement will not allow any provision for Indian professionals to work in Sri Lanka.

Jagoda also said farmers are undergoing immense hardships due to issues relating to fertiliser subsidy and that therefore the government should streamline the fertiliser subsidy programme.

He also accused the former President of shedding crocodile tears: "Mahinda Rajapaksa is now shedding crocodile tears for the people of Rathupaswala. Rajapaksa has totally forgotten that the Rathupaswala people, who asked for water, were shot during his regime," he said. He also said the Megapolis programme of the government was none other that the programme carried out by the previous government under the Urban Development Authority, and that both projects were all the more similar in that they caused hindrance to the people, especially those dwelling in Colombo.
