Majority Sri Lankans do not follow Family Planning

The majority of Sri Lankans do not follow proper family planning methods, sources from the Family Health Bureau said.

A recent survey conducted by the Bureau showed that 45 percent of Sri Lankan women do not follow a family planning method. This often leads to illegal and risky abortions, the sources said.

The number of maternal deaths reported during the last two years is 150. A significant number of maternal deaths were the results of risky sexual intercourse during pregnancy, the sources revealed.

The Family Health Bureau advises newly married couples and young Sri Lankan parents to seek their service - which is free of charge - in order to educate themselves on family planning. A special booklet has been published in this regard, Bureau sources added.
