Drugs for kidney patients to be airlifted on Thursday

Drugs for kidney patients will be airlifted on Thursday on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena, Health Services Director General Dr. Palitha Mahipala said.

According to Dr. Mahipala, Anuradhapura has 21,000 patients suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology.

He made this observation after participating in an inspection tour of the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital to look into the drug shortage at the hospital.

The drug, One Alpha required for kidney patients will be provided as soon as possible on the instructions of Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

Dr. Mahipala pointed out that it was reported that three drugs required to treat kidney patients are not available and the drugs will be imported and provided by Thursday.

The reasons behind the shortage are following the tender procedure, importing from foreign countries etc, he said.

Provincial drug storage places will be kept open until 10.00 p.m. and the vehicles given to doctors will be used to transport drugs at night.

Although there is a drug shortage at Anuradhapura and Padaviya hospitals, drugs adequate for two months are stored at the Medical Supplies Division in Colombo, he added.
